Kathua, June 5: Marking World Environment Day, BJP MLA from Jasrota, Rajiv Jasrotia, called for a comprehensive and collective approach towards environmental conservation, emphasizing that safeguarding nature is essential for ensuring a prosperous, healthy, and sustainable future for Jammu and Kashmir.
In his message on the occasion, Jasrotia said that Jammu and Kashmir is endowed with immense natural wealth, including majestic mountains, lush forests, pristine rivers, wetlands, and rich biodiversity. However, he cautioned that increasing environmental degradation, climate change, shrinking green cover, pollution, and unplanned urban expansion pose serious challenges to the ecological balance of the Union Territory.
He stressed that environmental protection should go beyond ceremonial observances and become a continuous public movement involving government institutions, local bodies, educational establishments, civil society organizations, and citizens alike.
“The future of Jammu and Kashmir depends on how responsibly we preserve our natural resources today. Environmental conservation is not merely a government responsibility; it is a collective obligation of every citizen,” Jasrotia stated.
Highlighting key areas requiring urgent attention, the MLA advocated for large-scale afforestation drives, rejuvenation of water bodies, protection of forests, scientific management of solid waste, promotion of renewable energy, and strict measures against plastic pollution. He also emphasized the need to strengthen environmental awareness among youth so that sustainable living becomes a way of life.
Jasrotia observed that the recurring challenges of flash floods, landslides, erratic weather patterns, declining water resources, and rising temperatures underline the importance of adopting climate-resilient development strategies. He called for greater investment in green infrastructure, sustainable tourism, and environmentally responsible urban planning to protect the fragile ecology of Jammu and Kashmir.
The BJP leader further stressed the importance of preserving traditional water sources, promoting rainwater harvesting, and encouraging community participation in conservation initiatives. He said that every tree planted and every natural resource conserved contributes to building a healthier environment for future generations.
Referring to the growing environmental concerns across the globe, Jasrotia noted that Jammu and Kashmir can emerge as a model of sustainable development by balancing economic growth with ecological preservation. He urged citizens to reduce waste generation, avoid single-use plastics, conserve water and energy, and actively participate in cleanliness and plantation campaigns.
“World Environment Day should serve as a reminder that nature is our greatest asset. By protecting forests, rivers, lakes, and biodiversity, we are safeguarding the future of our children and strengthening the foundations of a resilient and prosperous Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
Concluding his message, Rajiv Jasrotia appealed to all stakeholders to work in unison for creating a greener, cleaner, and environmentally secure Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming that sustainable development and environmental stewardship must remain central to the region’s growth and progress.
